2000, September 21
Dear Sirs:
Thank you for meeting with me last evening where we engaged in many hours of important dialogue. As you recognized, this was a historic meeting. I listened to your concerns and I am gaining, through your insight, a deeper understanding and appreciation of your feelings. I am pleased that you also viewed the meeting as one in which you were able to release some pain and that you left the meeting with some hope.
You will remember that last evening you asked me to inform the Crown prosecutors' Office of your concerns. I indicated to you that I would seek advice as to whether I could legally do so, as well as do so in a manner which would in no way be interpreted as an interference in due process of law, or the administration of justice.
Early this morning, I received advice that I was able to share your many concerns with the Crown prosecutor. Thus, I want you to know that your petition, and your feelings and concerns regarding the validity of the charges involving Mr. Melendez will be fully disclosed to the Crown Attorney, according to the rules of criminal procedure.
I wanted to convey this important information before your community
meeting this evening, because it vertainly highlights the value of discussing
matters face to face in an environment of mutualrespect. I think you will
agree with me that our meeting last evening had at least one very good
result. Let us continue to listen to each other.
I spoke of my pending retirement during our discussions, and I want to assure you that Deputy Chief Rick Hanson and Deputy Chief Peter Copple will provide the continuity between the Latin American Community Association and the Calgary Police Service to further our dialogue and seek solutions to issues we mutually share. Please contact either of them directed at 206-5900, or at 133 6th Avenue S.E., Calgary, T2G 4Z1, or through Constable Neville Wells at 206-8316.
Yours sincerely,
