Juan Domingo Melendez Hernandez was charged with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer following an altercation with un-uniformed and uniformed members of the Calgary Police Service on August 17, 2000. The charges were later stayed.
Since then, Melendez’s plight to clear his name from all charges and to find justice within Alberta’s justice system has been ongoing.
On October 11, 2001, a judgement of the Alberta Law Enforcement Review Board made recommendation to the Calgary Chief of Police Jack Beaton to hold a hearing for one of the officers involved in the incident for illegal arrest and confinement of Juan Domingo Melendez Hernandez.
Today Juan Melendez has no criminal convictions or charges pending against him. Juan Melendez has been notified via phone that a hearing against the police officer, Constable James Grossklaus, has been scheduled. Confirmation of date will be announced as soon as it is verified by Calgary Police Service in writing.
