RE: Charges Laid against Juan melendez by the Calgary Police Service

I have been asked to reply to your October 6, 2000 letter to the Minister of Justice.

Since the charges against Mr. Melendez has been laid and is in court, it must be dealt with. However, the next week's court appearance is not for trial but only for first appearance. My suggestion would be that Mr. Melendez, who must attend court, ask the court for a one month adjournment so that the internal investigation by the Calgary City Police be received and reviewed by the Crown in Calgary. Until such time, there is no real way of determining how this whole matter will proceed.

In order that any other concerns that you have be addressed more directly in the future, my suggestion would be that you deal directly with Mr. Haggland in the Crown's office in Calgary.
